There are television shows around it, books written about it, magazines dedicated to it, and a litany of products that are related to it. I have the benefit of not only being a player, but being involved on the side “written word” side of the game. This not only means that I make a living dispensing my view of the game and how it should be played, but I also get a crack at a number of products available. Odds calculators are becoming bigger and bigger business. Some of them are not worth the space the take up on a player’s hard drive and some are pretty good. Like anything else, though, there has to be a “best”, and Pokerbility is light years ahead of any of the other calculators on the market today.

Pokerbility will have its most immediate and dramatic impact on those who are new to the game of Texas Hold’em. As we all know, there is so much more to the game than a full house beating two-pair. Pokerbility will not only advise the new player about what to do, but the display shows the calculations that support the decision. Chuck Blount: Poker software delivers leg up for online cash games

The latest estimates indicate there are 20-30 million poker players in the United States and more than 100 million worldwide. At any one time, you can easily find 60,000 or more playing online poker.

But you can't help but wonder how many more would be willing to play if the fear of losing a lot of money was absent.

With live poker, this education comes through the school of hard knocks, but online players can now seek solace with the aid of the latest computer aid — Pokerbility.

Pokerbility is a program designed to attach to your computer and work with many of the various online poker rooms. It provides up-to-the-second analysis of your hand strength in relation to the field.

If you get dealt a lousy hand like 9s-2c, Pokerbility will tell you your hand is an underdog to more than 95 percent of the possible hands out there. Pokerbility also may tell you that Ks-Js is a decent hand in middle position and stands a 72 percent chance of being the best hand. Easy stuff, I know, but you have to start somewhere.

These numbers will spell out the strength of your hand. Pokerbility will then take these numbers and provide recommendations, suggesting to either check, call, fold or raise.

"Poker is a game of numbers and for a lot of people, it's like having a tutor sitting alongside you while you play," Jeff Brinks of Pokerbility said. "The human mind can't calculate the statistics as you play with the accuracy of this program."

The product comes with a default strategy setting that players can use right from the start, but there is more than one available style. Pokerbility has customization options to make the advice as tight or loose as the player desires, even though the math will remain constant.

"If you stick to the recommendations, you will for sure play better than what you had, and I'm confident that most players will show a profit over the long term," Brinks said.

Before the launch of Pokerbility six months ago, the company put together a test of 1,000 players who followed the advice completely while using the software online. Brinks said 93 percent showed a profit after 1,000 hands of play.

Pokerbility has already registered more than 100,000 downloads through its Web site, pokerbility.com. Players can purchase the product for $49.95 or may secure the product for free through online poker promotions. Customers may also secure a free trial of the product through the Web site.

Using the software, I played a 25-50 cent No-Limit Hold 'Em cash game session on a well-known poker Web site. I played 200 hands under the guideline that I would use only the advice dispersed through the software, despite my desire to do otherwise. The only adjustment made was to make the playing style slightly looser than the default setting.

The session produced a $36 profit. I tried it two more times and produced another $17 win and a $14 loss, but the long-term results through 600 hands produced a $39 win after eight hours of play for about $5 per hour profit. Not bad at all if you could keep this rate going long term.

The software works well for cash games, but loses much of its appeal in tournament play. Using it during a single-table tournament, the program suggested I fold As-10c in early position with four players remaining in the game while sitting on the low stack.

This was horrible advice, but the fix is in the works. Brinks said that adjustments to the software for tournament play are expected to be unveiled within a month or two.

You've heard of someone losing his shirt while gambling? That's the idea behind - drum roll, please - the World Series of Strip Poker.
